in early fall 2017, the hall opened it’s doors. right here in des moines, IA. the building was home to an iron foundry + railcar barn in the late 1800’s. and then, nothing! after what I can imagine was an insane + amazing renovation, it now resembles a german bier hall, with long picnic-esque tables. I’m convinced whoever had the idea to bring this historic building back to life is a genius!

besides being in a refurbished railcar barn + iron foundry (which is really neat), there isn’t a friend you can’t make happy here! while I am perfectly happy drinking a pint of whatever is on tap, we all have that friend who is not. for those friends – they have craft cocktails, wine, coffee, and water. if you’re wanting food too? they will have a local food truck (or three) there. the best part: YOU DON’T HAVE TO GO OUTSIDE TO ORDER! you can order from their “food counter” on a tablet. it let’s you scan through each food truck’s menu, place + pay for your order. you then go back to your seat + your beverage and watch the screen over the bar. it’ll tell you when your food is ready + you just pick it up from the counter. while you warm weather folk probably don’t understand the big deal, but this is a big deal! I’d rather skip eating than stand outside mid-iowa winter waiting for a food truck to cook my food.
this spot hits most (if not all) of the marks for me! the drink menu, the rotating food trucks + innovative ordering system, the bringing back to life a historic des moines building, huge TV’s for game day, and a great gathering spot for friends! cheers to you, the hall.
how do you define a good bar?
