6 essentials for your newborn.

June 13, 2017

the thought of bringing home a baby can be overwhelming. you’ve listened to your friends + family and studied up on the internet. now you just cross your fingers and hope you have everything you need. or that’s what we did. (see inside our nursery here).

we’ve been home with baby jackson for a month now. we’re slowly + still adjusting to our new normal. as I continue to get the hang of this new mom thing, I’m beginning to recognize the absolute must-have items. they just make the days easier.

6 essentials for your newborn.

swaddles | we have three kinds (the blankets, the wraps + the sleep sack). we use them all + they all serve a purpose.

kimono shirts | also known as “jackson’s pajamas”. each night, we put him in one of these shirts + swaddle him. that’s what he sleeps in. it makes our middle of the night diaper changes so much easier.

burp cloths | these should be a no-brainer, but would you believe me if I told you.. we completely forgot about them. (we did). shortly before our due date, my mom nonchalantly says “do you have enough burp cloths?”. I look at the husband in sheer panic. needless to say, we’ve since stocked up. we’re constantly using them (because babies constantly eat) and I’d love to not do laundry every single day, so we got extra. these are our favorites.

aquaphor | when baby jackson was in the hospital, the NICU nurses swore by it for pretty much everything. they used it for ANY redness, specifically on his face or bum. I’ve been using it for years myself, as moisturizer for my lips. I carry around a jar in my bag. and we now keep some very near our changing table.

car seat cover | we almost didn’t get one of these. thank goodness we did. it’s more than proven it’s worth over the past few weeks. our car seat snaps into our stroller, so for walks this cover keeps the sun out. it also does when he’s riding in the car. not to mention, it’s a very nice way of saying “keep out” to those baby-crazy-people. I didn’t think I’d be the overly protective parent that gets worked up over strangers touching their baby, but I am. after baby jackson’s extended hospital stay, I will do whatever necessary to ensure we don’t end up back there. so unless I know your hands are clean + you’re healthy, paws off my tiny baby. (AMIRIGIHT?). we just got a new one + love it even more, get it here.

rock + play | this thing is improperly named .. but it is essential. (if I took a stab at naming it, I’d call it the “soothe + sleep”). it vibrates, which creates a subtle white noise. if you push it, it rocks. it’s shaped like a hammock, so they feel comforted + cozy. I keep it on our main floor. during the day, he spends quite a bit of time in there. it’s lightweight + easy to relocate. for example: I’ll slide it into the kitchen while I’m preparing lunch. or next to the couch, while I’m writing this.

what would you add to this list?

I agree with all of these! Oh, how I wish my children enjoyed being swaddled…life would be easier in the beginning haha. But I still swear by them, even if my kids didn’t like them…we got William to at least like his at night until he was two months old. Aquaphor, yes! Rock and play, triple yes!

we save swaddling for bedtime. but starting last night, he’s decided he wants to be swaddle-free. so just like your little – 2 months must be the magic age!

I enjoy all your posts – this one in particular is quite helpful! I’m currently 38 weeks preggers and my daughter can make her appearance any day now…waiting, waiting, waiting! When I saw your post and knowing you’re a new mom, I knew I had to read!

& I am thrilled, I have all of these items (same exact patterned Carseat Canopy!) except for aquaphor, which has been added to my last minute items to get before my babe makes her appearance.

    Thanks for sharing!!
