it is now very rare the husband asks me: “what do you want to do today?” the last time he asked, we ended up driving three hours across the state for a spontaneous day trip to decorah, iowa. he didn’t even hesitate before saying “let’s go!”. I can only assume he was so onboard because my maternity leave was coming to an end in mere days + he knew I’d have a ton of (irrational but valid) rebuttals waiting if he said no. also, we love to road trip + visit new places. so, why not?
day trip | decorah, IA.
decorah is a quaint, beautiful town nestled in the northeast corner of iowa. home of a brewery well-known in the craft beer world, toppling goliath. that was our first stop! we had to try the infamous pseudosue in the town it’s brewed. while drinking our beers, we noticed we were right around the corner from dunnings springs park. we wandered just long enough to wish we had A LOT more time to explore.
we fell in love with the downtown area! it is what you picture quintessential small town iowa to be.
tucked right in the middle of it all is mabe’s pizza. if you tell anyone you’re going to decorah, they will recommend this restaurant. so, we went + dined on chicken cordon bleu pizza. yum! and just like that, our day trip was over. or that’s what I thought when I noticed it was 5:00PM and we had a three hour drive ahead of us. (the drive home is the worst). we grabbed iced coffees from a local coffee shop as we headed out of town.
although our trip was so quick, it was great + every minute well spent. we had just enough time in decorah to know we will back for a longer visit very, very soon!
