on your birthday, you should be loved by your favorite people + enjoy your favorite things. or at least, that’s my take on birthdays.
as our toddler’s second birthday approached, I asked him on multiple occasions: “would you like cake or a donut for your birthday?” (he really likes donuts). his response was always: “DONUT!”
to make his donut birthday-worthy, I decided to make a tiered donut cake. it’d have the appearance + feel of a birthday cake, but be made up of an assortment of donuts. instead of purchasing a multi-tiered cake stand (that I’d probably never use again), I made one with supplies from the dollar store.
to make a DIY donut birthday cake stand, all you need is:
• 2 dinner plates
• 1 salad plate
• 2 short vases / I went with square, but you could also use rounded or candlestick holders
• an adhesive / I just used my trusty hot glue gun
it is that easy. it cost $5 and turned out adorable. it’d be fun to fill the vases with confetti.
we celebrated his birthday with a weekend getaway to galena. (we celebrated his first birthday there too. it’s one of our favorite places to visit. see my galena travel guide here). on our way out of town, we stopped by our favorite local donut shop and picked up a dozen assorted donuts and 5 cronuts. if you’re local to des moines, chu chu donuts has thee most delicious cronuts, so the husband + I made sure a few were included in our donut cake masterpiece.
we added “T-W-O” candles to the top donuts + he was able to blow out his birthday candles on his donut cake. the excitement on his face when we revealed his “cake” was absolutely priceless.
we’re just glad he agreed to share a few.
