the husband + I have been wanting to add to our family for awhile now. we were waiting for the “right time”. as if there is ever a “right time”. you (or at least I) can always come up with some
BS reason as to why it isn’t quite right. (disclosure: reasons typically not valid). we had been closely watching a pet rescue’s website for months (AHeinz57 Pet Rescue & Transport), just in case. we saw so many adorable faces, but kept strong with our “not the right time” speech. until we laid eyes on a litter of golden retriever/border collie puppies ..
the husband sent me a link to one of the puppies in that litter; a little girl, with the sweetest eyes. I responded to him “fill out an application,” and he replied “already did”. so much for having a conversation with your wife before making big decisions. just kidding. we had been talking about it for so long, I wondered if we’d ever actually just do it. and he did. the process went fairly quickly from there. a few questions and a home visit. after the home visit, we were told it’d probably take 2-3 days until we heard back. we got a call 20 minutes later, asking if we wanted to come out + meet her. we took her home that night.
we are now a family of four.
meet lady eleanor.
we felt that was only appropriate since her sibling (by marriage) is sir rigby, the cat. they are now eleanor + rigby. they love each other + are getting along famously. which was our biggest concern bringing a puppy into our family. sir rigby may have been suffering from only child syndrome. but he’s amazed us, and openly accepts eleanor as his own. they are hysterical to watch together. fingers crossed they’re both this accepting if we happen to add another member to the family. someday. we’ll work on potty training the puppy first ..
important note: we chose to adopt a puppy from a pet rescue. she came from a golden retriever breeder, who wasn’t too thrilled a border collie came around. they did not want “mutt puppies”. one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. eleanor is not a mutt. she is our fur baby, and so adorable. we love her floppy ears + the subtle white on each of her paws. we cannot wait to see how beautiful she’ll be as a full grown dog. not to be on a soap box, but if you’re thinking about adding to your family ..consider saving a life + adopt from a pet rescue. (and if you’re in the des moines area, AHeinz 57 Pet Rescue & Transport is amazing!).
